Knockbeg’s Senior Footballers got their season off to a winning start in Graiguecullen on Tuesday. The game was a tight and low scoring affair due to the blustery weather conditions and Enniscorthy’s highly defensive system.
Having been frustrated in the opening 20 minutes Knockbeg trailed 3-2 despite playing with the wind. However, the boys in blue and white finished the 1st half with a flurry of points from Patrick Walsh, Conor Nolan and Diarmuid Ruth(2) to lead 6-3 at the break. They could have had more breathing space but for Ronan Curran hitting the crossbar with the goal at his mercy.
After the interval Diarmuid Ruth added to his first half double as Knockbeg played against the elements. They were also guilty of missing two good goal scoring opportunities midway through the half, and had to be content with two white flags from Ronan Curran and Jamie Lunney. However, they were to secure victory as Curran got his third of the day after good work from Conor Nolan and Jack Lacey.
Last year’s beaten All Ireland finalists, St. Peter’s of Wexford, awaits us in the 2nd round next week.
