Knockbeg’s 1st Year basketball team lost out in the Midlands final against Heywood CS last Wednesday.  The game finished 27-26 after overtime, with Heywood securing the victory from the free-throw line with 9 seconds left on the clock.

The game opened at a frantic pace with both sides missing multiple scoring opportunities.  This trend continued into the second quarter with Knockbeg leading a very low scoring first half 7-6.

Both teams started to hit form in the second half with some great scores by both sides.  Stalwarts such as Oisin Nolan, Adam Deay, Jack Murphy and Kyle Nolan led the way for Knockbeg.  Knockbeg had victory in their grasp, leading by two points with one minute on left the clock.  However a defensive miscommunication allowed Heywood to equalise and bring the game into overtime.

A score from both sides left overtime level with ten seconds to play.  Unfortunately Knockbeg were called for team fouls putting Heywood on the line with a chance to win the game.  Heywood scored one free throw leaving Knockbeg unable to score with 9 seconds remaining on the clock.

The bitterly disappointed Knockbeg team didn’t want for determination or desire, but the lack of basketball experience may have cost them on the day.  Both sides now progress to the All-Ireland play-offs to be held in an as yet to be decided venue in April.
