FirstYears Reach Regional Final

It was a busy week for Knockbeg’s first yearbasketball team in which they played two incredibly tough games. 

The week’s first fixture saw Knockbeg facelocal rivals Gaelcoláiste Ceatharlach. GCC had previously won a friendly fixture by eight points and Knockbegknew they would have it all to do.  Thefirst quarter was very tight with both sides finding it tough to score.  In the second quarter some great scores byKyle Nolan and Jack Murphy ensured that Knockbeg had a narrow lead athalf-time.  In the second half thecontest remained close but scores from Oisín Nolan and Adam Deay guaranteedKnockbeg would emerge victorious despite a late GCC surge.  With the victory Knockbeg topped theirrespective pool and set up a Midlands semi-final fixture against Kildare TownCommunity School.

Knockbeg hosted Kildare Town CS on Thursdaymorning.  Knockbeg got off to a greatstart and led 14-4 at the end of the first quarter thanks to scores from OisínNolan and Denis Durojaiye.  The gameebbed and flowed with both sides experiencing dominant spells but Knockbegmanaged to convert more scoring chances while maintaining a well-disciplineddefence.  The final score was 28-16.  Knockbeg’s key player was undoubtedly KarlO’Hara who pitched in with 12 points including two 3-pointers.

Knockbeg will now face the winner of Heywood CSv Moate CS in the Midlands final. The teams will meet in St. Mary’s hall inPortlaoise at 10am on Wednesday 15 March.
