The start of this school year saw continued development within The Base with the opening of our second ASD Class. We extend a warm welcome to the new students and staff.
Five of our students are busy preparing for Leaving Cert. They recently had their profile done by the HSE Occupational Guidance Officer as part of their Transition Plan for life after secondary school. We are in the process of organising visitations and course sampling for the students after Christmas. Another student is enjoying the opportunities and experiences of Transition Year, having done very well in his Junior Cert. Our first year students are settling in very well to Knockbeg life.
Highlight of the term so far have been our visit to Mondello Park where the students got to watch some drifting, visited the control room and car museum. Our visit to Carlow IT, which included a visit to the Hanger, gave the students a great insight into the facilities in the college. We also had very enjoyable trips to Glenbarrow and Glendalough.
Our weekly cooking classes are still a firm favourite. We can be spotted in the supermarket most Thursday mornings buying ingredients and the students have certainly developed the skill of getting the best value for our money! Hopefully by the end of the year, they might cook up a surprise for the staff!
As we say farewell to 2016, a big thank you to the students, their families and all the staff involved in The Base and every best wish for 2017.
