Knockbeg junior footballers year came to an end in Scoil Mhuire Clane on Wednesday. After a delayed start Knockbeg started poorly conceding a goal in the first minute. With a strong wind behind them, Clane put serious pressure on Knockbeg. Knockbeg for their part battled well, creating lots of chances but failing to convert. We may have left our shooting boots in our last practice match over the Christmas holidays. Saved one on chances from Ross Bolger, Josh Lacey and Finbarr Kavanagh added to the frustration of a number of missed frees. At half time the score was 3-5 to 2 points and the mood was glum.
Yet a testament to this group is their character. Captain Diarmuid Ruth delivered a rousing battle cry and the team set about the second half in determined fashion. Bit by bit the clawback started. Knockbeg dragging the deficit down to four. Goals by Ross Bolger and Ruth along with some classy points from Josh Lacey and Jamie Lunney started a panic across the Clane team and sideline. Credit toClane, in particular their centre forward who steadied the ship and tacked on two points to extend the lead to six. The last 5 mins was an all out assault on the Clane goal. Goalkeeper Tom Wright delivering a series of 45s into the danger zone, and one over the bar. Alas it was to be too much too late. The concession of early goals along with double figures for missed chances meant tahts adly the year ended.
The panel can be very proud of their progress this year and if this group of young men continue to show the same attitude and application they will develop into a talented senior group. 12 of the panel are underage next year and will undoubtedly bring what they have learned forward to next year.
