On Thursday 24th of November Knockbeg’s junior football team made the long journey to St Peter’s College in Wexford. Winners would earn themselves a place in the South Leinster semi-final with the losers going into a quarter final. Knockbeg made a promising start and looked threatening early on. Josh Lacey opened Knockbeg’s account with a well taken free from the right side-line. Unfortunately Peters upped the tempo and scored the first of what was to be four first half goals. Knockbeg had plenty of possession and both midfielders Diarmuid Ruth and Jamie Lunney scored a point each. Again Josh Lacey was asking questions of the Peters backs and scored two nice points from play before he slotted over another free. But each time Knockbeg looked like getting on top, Peters struck with a goal. Knockbeg lost their full back Darragh McDonald to injury five minutes before the break being replaced by Ciaran O’Hagan. Jamie Lunney scored another point just before the break to leave the score line Knockbeg 7 points St Peters 4-1.
Knockbeg tightened things up in the backs in the second half and again looked threatening with Paddy Regan, Ross Bolger, Ger Kelly and Jack Lacey all combining well in the forwards. Knockbeg missed a couple of clear-cut goal chances which was eventually the difference between the teams. Robbie Langton replaced Cillian Bergin in the backs with Cuan Anthony coming on for Ross Bolger. Cuan made an immediate impact slotting over a nice pointed free from the left before he scored a well worked point from play. Josh Lacey scored another point from a free before Jamie Lunney netted to get Knockbeg back within touching distance of Peters. Dylan Doyle replaced Paddy Regan up front. Goalkeeper Tom Wright made a great save from a penalty to keep Knockbeg in the hunt. Conor Donlon, Eoin Fitzpatrick, Liam Seery and Ronon Stapleton all worked hard to limit Peters to just three points in the second half. Diarmuid Ruth scored a great point from play to leave just one point between the sides. This was as close as Knockbeg were to get. Peters pointed late to seal the victory. Knockbeg now go on to play Patrician Secondary School Newbridge in a quarter final.
Final score Knockbeg 1-11 St Peters 4-4.
