On the 15th of November Knockbeg’s junior football team played Good Counsel College New Ross in round 2 of the south Leinster junior football A championship. Knockbeg started this match well and put a lot of pressure on Good Council in the opening 15 minutes. Josh Lacey was first to score taking a well-earned point. He also slotted over a free shortly after this. His brother Jack took a great point from play before Josh slotted over another free. Knockbeg were 4 points up before GC got their first score. Knockbeg kept the pressure on but failed to capitalise on a couple of goal chances, until Paddy Regan stepped up to flick home an excellently worked goal by the Knockbeg forwards. Josh Lacey put over another free just before the break to leave the score line 1-5 to 0-4 at the break.
Again Knockbeg started brightly in the second half. Josh Lacey scored an early pointed free. Jamie Lunney was rewarded for good play down the center when he pointed from 25 meters. Then came a crucial 10 minute spell for Knockbeg. Jack Lacey did some good work up the right wing and fired at the GC goal only to have it well saved by their keeper. GC put the Knockbeg backs under pressure and eventually scored a good goal. Just after this Paddy Regan and Cathal Morahan combined well in the full forward line only for Cathal to be pulled down at the expense of a penalty. Up stood Jamie Lunney to drive low to the corner and open up some daylight with GC. Paddy Regan, center back Liam Seery and substitute Dylan Doyle scored 3 great points from play and Josh Lacey put over another free. Darragh Mcdonald had a man of the match performance at full back with Conor Donlon, Robbie Langton, Eoin Fitzpatrick and Ronon Stapleton all making vital interceptions in the backs. Captain on the day Diarmuid Ruth won a lot of ball around the middle and was helped greatly by Ger Kelly and Ross Bolger. Ciaran O’Hagan and Robert Collins also did well when they were introduced. The scoreline finished Knockbeg 2-11 GC 1-8. Knockbeg now play St Peter’s of Wexford in the next round.
