There has been plenty of activity for the students with ASD in The Base in the first few months of 2016. Every opportunity is given to them to follow the curriculum at an appropriate pace and level and to participate in mainstream activities and classes where they are able. There is also a strong focus on developing life and social skills during their time in The Base.
Some recent out of school excursions include visits to the Young Scientist Exhibition, the 1798 Museum in Wexford, Military Museum in The Curragh, the Mosque in Clonskeagh, Collins Barracks and Arbour Hill Cemetery and a Trip to Belfast to Titanic Museum and W5 Science and Discovery Centre.
The Art Students in The Base enjoyed the Yinka Shonibare exhibition in the Visual Theatre while all the
students attended a Cyber Bullying Seminar and Road Safety Talk and Demo in school.
As part of the Life Skills Module we have continued with a cookery class every fortnight. Our students who have just turned 18 have completed Register of Electors forms. We are also practising online bookings
(e.g. flights, rail and bus tickets), reading timetables and preparing for the Driver Theory Test. One of our
students has already passed the test and has started his driving lessons. For those of us driving for a while, the students could certainly teach us a thing or two on the theory of driving!
