Dónal English-Hayden Memorial Tournament
The Dónal English-Hayden memorial Hurling Tournament was held on a beautiful spring day in Carlow GAA’s centre of excellence in Fenagh on the 20th of April 2016. The event was organised by Knockbeg college and Carlow GAA to honour the memory of Dónal. 6 teams from 5 different schools around the county took part in the tournament where the emphasis was on participation and enjoyment.
Group 1 consisted of : Knockbeg 1, Tullow CS and Colaiste Eoin
Group 2 consisted of: Knockbeg 2, Gaelcolaiste/Pres and Carlow CBS.
Each team played 2 group games to decide on the pairings for the finals.
In the division 1 final Tullow narrowly beat Gaelcolaiste/Pres after a very close and skilful game. Colaiste Eoin beat Carlow CBS in the division 2 final. The shield final was contested by 2 evenly matched knockbeg teams. In the end Knockbeg 2, captained by Éanna Holland, ran out the overall victors by a narrow margin.
Dónals family presented the prizes to the victors of their respective finals and after that Dónals father gave some words about Dónal and his love for the GAA and how everyone should keep playing their game of choice. A big thank you to all who participated and to Brendan Hayden and the referees.
