Laois Senior Football League Round 1
Knockbeg College 2-14   Portlaoise CBS 0-14
Knockbeg College opened their campaign in the Senior Laois League with a two goal victory away to Portlaoise CBS. This was an excellent game with some wonderful scores on both sides as the game went right down to wire with late goals sealing the victory for Knockbeg.
The game opened with Knockbeg playing with the benefit of the elements but it was Portlaoise who raced into a 5 – 1 lead with some very good play from James O’Connor of Timahoe and John Kavanagh of Portlaoise. Knockbeg settled after the opening quarter and got their noses in front by half time on a score line of 7 points to 6 thanks mainly to 3 from Mark McDermott and two from midfielder Ger Brennan.
The second half followed suit with the first half as Portlaoise dominated early exchanges and got back in front to lead by 3 with 12 minutes left thanks again to points from Kavanagh and James Phelan of the Heath. However, Knockbeg once again finished the half stronger as two of their many substitutes, Michael Doran and Eoghan McGlinchey both found the net in the last 10 minutes following some excellent build up play by fellow substitutes Conor Crowley and Johnny Byrne.
Knockbeg now play Heywood C.S. to see who advances to the final of the Bill Phelan Cup as all the colleges prepare for their respective championship in November and December.
